Cheers to October

With September almost in the books, the unofficial New Year is well underway and we prepare to start the greatest month of the year...October!

There are a number of things that make October the king of all months. Unlike the official 2nd month of the year February, October doesn't shortchange you days. No matter what the year is, you always get your full compliment of 31 days in October. Well done, October! *Random fact, October ends on the same day of the week as February every year - check it out*

For all those sports enthusiasts, there's no time on the calendar that compares to October. OK, March Madness puts up a fight for March as a solid sports month. Yes, the Super Bowl is played in February and it's a pretty big deal. Sure, the Stanley Cup is awarded at some crazy point of the summer and it's the toughest trophy in sports to earn. For a true sports fan, it's the greater picture you can't overlook that puts October head & shoulders above the other sports months. The English Premier League & UEFA Champions League are both in full swing in October, while the gong show that is the NBA is set to kick-off. The NHL season gets underway in October and virtually every team has some level of optimism for the upcoming season - you'll undoubtedly have already heard this if you're within earshot of a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. October baseball in Major League Baseball provides some great drama; like any marathon, the reward for completing such a long grind and sharing that with your supporters can bring you to tears. The volume of quality sports programming in October is simply amazing and unmatched by any other month. Your generosity overwhelms me October!

In Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October and students get their first chance to come home from schools across the nation. While the chance to visit with family and enjoy a coma inducing amount of turkey is further support for Octobers greatness, it's the commonly overlooked "Turkey Dump" that makes October fantastic for students across the country. No, I'm not referring to a huge bowel movement thanks to crazy amounts of turkey being consumed - although when you think about it, that's really just another plus for October - I'm talking about the end of those summer flings and the realization that the heat in the relationship was just the burning summer sun. October gives you a break to visit friends & family, indulge in a great meal and for students, October sends them back to school again, where the pool of potential new mates has just been flooded. You're the best wingman a friend could ask for October.

Finally, as the mercury starts to fall in October, it provides a great opportunity for new wardrobes and more importantly, ugly sweaters. Sure, July & August have the bikini and September is near the top of the list for those that attended a catholic high school Yes, May brings back the warm weather and layers start to peal off but is there really anything better then an ugly sweater? As October gently ushers us towards the bitter chill of later months, October brings out the ugly sweaters and you can't help but smile. While many months strive towards either fashion or function in their wardrobes, October achieves both with the ugly sweater. Looking good October!

So here's to October...the most beautiful time of year and a month so good, we send it off with a costume party - ugly sweater party anyone?

And so it begins...

...my life as a blogger!

I've decided to jump into the world of online blogging and share my thoughts, opinions, rants & raves with the rest of the world.

What will this blog be about?  I haven't the slightest idea but in turn I ask; do parents know how their children will turn out, only hours after they are born?  My hypothesis is, they don't.  My aim is to deliver an entertaining reading experience while expressing myself on the topic of the day.

Stay tuned...more to come
